Thoughts on History

More than any other group, you all should be closely watching the current national climate. Yesterday was certainly a history-making moment. What are your thoughts on this time in our nation's history? I have linked the text of the inaugural address below, if anyone wants to link to it and comment on any aspect of the speech itself.

Inauguration '09

This period in history will be remembered whether Barack Obama is an exceptional President or not. The fact is, he is the first person of minority race to be elected leader of a country that has not historically tolerated minorities, African-Americans in particular.
As far as the actual speech goes, it was very impressive, as are most from a talented orator such as Obama. My personal favorite part was when he said he will judge other countries based not on what they can destroy, but what they can build. Another high point was that America needs to regain the courage to make the difficult decisions. That is definitely the right attitude to have in a delicate time such as this.

I certainly believe that this moment in our history is very significant. Although he was not my candidate of choice, I believe he has done a great job of creating a plan to lead our nation forward. He certainly represents hope to all and change for the future and I greatly respect him for that.

It shows great progress for the country that we have move to the point that we elect an Africa American as our leader. I think that his speech, although not his best, was wonderful and filled many people with hope. I believe that he will greatly help us in our economic crisis and I believe that he will be good for the change of this country.

I was very glad we had school off on Tuesday so I could watch the Inauguration. I thought his speech was inspiring. One of my favorite parts was when he talked about the patchwork heritage of America. Also, right after that, how he spoke of the rest of the world. I truely feel that with Obama leading us we will become a positive force in the world and gain some respect back from other countries that was lost over the past years. I'm excited to see how our country evolves in the world.

Tuesday was a day that will be remembered forever. I agree with Sias. If I was 18 by the time of voting, Obama probably would not have been the candidate i voted for. Now I have seen more and more of Obama's ideas and think he has done a good job. Even though I didn't get to watch the whole inaugaration, I watched bits and pieces of it. From the parts I watched during his speech he had really good points. I believe it is a great time for changes to be made.

First of all, I just want to say that the smooth and peaceful way in which power is transferred in our great nation is truly extraordinary.
I believe President Obama will hold a special place in American history no matter the effectiveness of his administration. He has broken down a barrier that not too many years ago seemed to be impenetrable. Forty years ago, if you told someone that an African-American would hold the Office of President of the United States in 2009, they would have called you a fool. It truly is a testament to how far we have come.
President Obama's story embodies the American Dream. I believe his humble beginnings will motivate him throughout his tenure as President. I believe that he creates a very powerful image for other nations to see and that he is a person of fortitude. These traits should serve him well as he seeks to solve our nation's difficult problems.
As far as his speech goes, I thought it was well-written, but I was expecting to be able to pick out another "Ask Not" or "Fear Itself" moment . I was slightly disappointed that I couldn't find one.

I myself believe that this moment will mark a general shift in american policies and how other nations view us in the world. I hope President Obama leadership will prove to be aggressive in tackling many important issues that effect our nation today. Especially I hope more domestic problems will be addressed under his administration such as infastructure and development of rural areas with many basic needs. However only time will tell as to whether the proposed changes will really have the desired effect as previously promised to us while he was on the campaign trail. I do not expect him to fix everything, only that he initiates a program or policy that will be as a precedent for all others to follow. Rome wasn't built in a day, and i feel that many more days are to follow before we see more tangible results -Thomas

I believe that is was a great moment in history and i hope everyone was able to witness this event. I think it is incredible how our country went from very racist times to having a black president. That is simply amazing! Now for the speech i thought it was very good too! i think our President has a great plan for our furture as a country and i really believe he will make an improvement. B.G.

How did I just so happen to be left with following Robby's comment? Completely unfair.

To start I agree with Sias in that I did not support him as a candidate, but I do fully support him now as our President. I feel that respecting and believing in our leaders is very crucial in our country's success--if not, why did they get elected in the first place?

Obviously as others have said, this day was, indeed, significant. Not only from a historical standpoint, but also because of the situation our nation is currently in. I do not expect our nation to be patched up and fixed up in the first month or so. It took a while for our nation to get to where it is at and it will take a while to get where it needs to be.

Obama's speech was very good, and just long enough to keep my attention. Long speeches/sermons/teachings lose my attention no matter how good and motivating they are. He was to the point and very sure-sounding; confidence is something the people of America are looking for.

I can only hope that President Obama will not just be remembered for being the first African-American to be elected, but also to be great. I look forward to having the ability to tell my children about their history class from MY point of view.

Can I just say that, even though I said I love sophomores (and I DO!), it is the coolest feeling in the world to read such intelligent commentary from my students!!!

As others have stated, I believe this is an unbelievable period in history. As young as I am, I thought it would take much longer for a minority to be in the executive office. As an African-American myself, it was very motivational for me. I was happy to be able to see the change takin place on Tuesday since we were out of school.

Ok I seriously hope it is not my responsibility to comment on all eleven comments before mine. I agree with all of them. It was a moment in history that will forever be thought of as a turning point in America. It amazes me to see how quickly our Nation embraces such a drastic change. I am interested in seeing what type of changes Obama can make. It is one thing to make a promise, it is another to fulfill it.

PS: Mrs. Davis seriously sophomores are almost as bad as freshmen, thats disturbing

Tuesday, November 20, 2009 will be a day that I remember for the rest of my life. That is one thing I am certain of. Unlike some of the other bloggers, President Obama was my candidate of choice in this election. I had the privilege of being able to vote for him in the election. I am very proud to say that he is my president. The inauguration was really incredible to watch because of how great it is to American history. It is also important because he is the leader of our nation now. A lot of people have talked about his speech saying that it was not as good as the other ones, or saying that they were disappointed about how he did not mention how big this is for an African-American to be president. I personally thought his speech was great. It was not one of his best, but very good for the tone that he set. My favorite line was when he said, "Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin the work of remaking America." I think that he did not try to dwell as much on the fact that he had just made history because, though it is great, the most important thing for him right now is our nation. I think no matter what your opinion is, you should support President Obama because he is the leader of our nation now!

I think it's great that Obama has become president. While I was skeptical at first if he had enough experience I think that he will be able to accomplish great things. While I don't think his speach was as good as on election night it was still quite impressive. I hope that the country will get behind him and support him because he has a lot to deal with.

(Sarah L, seriously, when you were a sophomore I would have loved you too. And sophomores are NOTHING like freshman. And I did very much enjoy our discussion in AP today.) :)

Change. It is a word of hope. It is a word that embodies the American spirit and it has been Barack Obama's promise to our nation ever since his campaign began. Things certainly have changed. Massive hurricanes and tsunamis destroy billions of dollars in property and claim thousands of lives each year. The U.S. is at odds with Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, North Korea, and countless other nations. The planet's supply of fossil fuels is rapidly depleting. The ice caps are melting. And we are in the midst of the largest economic crisis since the Great Depression.

Yes, Barack Obama has already and will continue to change the course of history. But will it be for the better? Can he really make true the promises he once shouted to a desperate nation? He is our nation's first African-American president, but I would much rather him be remembered for the great things he accomplished while in office.

I've changed. Like many others, I did not initially support Obama. But I realize that in order to move forward we must put aside our differences. The states are strongest when united. Obama is perfect as far as what our nation needs RIGHT NOW. We need a leader, a new face to give hope to a struggling people. Obama may not be the greatest president we've ever had, but he has the ability to make America believe in itself again. We must always remember that it is her people, and not her president, that makes our country so special.

Can Obama really make the changes necessary to lift America back to it's feet? I certainly hope so. And maybe just a little hope is all we ever needed. I now believe in our nation. I believe in what our people can do if we work together. I believe in President Barack Obama. The promise of a better future. Change.

Tuesday was the most remembered day in history! It was amazing that we got to be out of school on the day to see our new President Barack Obama. I have to say I'm excited but scared to see the changes that will come upon our country. We are coming to a point in the economy that is very terrifying. Hopefully President Obama can bring us out of it. He is known for his speeches, but i was not very pleased with his speech i don't what it was. It just was not what I expected.I am very excited to see the changes he makes for our country.
