Epic Heroes (and small-town heroes)

We finished Beowulf today and most of you seemed to get it and even somewhat enjoy it. (I know, I know, Tanner, you didn't.) I would like to know what characteristics of Beowulf as an epic hero do you think are still respected in our society today? Are there elements of the Anglo-Saxon code of honor that are held dear in America in 2009?

I want to start off by saying I liked what we read of the story. The first section was boring and confusing to me, but the next two were good. I think that today it is still respected to fight for your people. Another thing in the story is how they really admired their king no matter what. Some people are like this in today's society but others are not (in respect to religion or politics). I do not think it is okay anymore to be so boastful like Beowulf. That was so annoying. Straight up arrogant.

Some of the story i did not really understand, but over all I thought it was pretty good. In todays society I still feel like some people fight for there people a prime example the war in Iraq. Soldiers are fighting for there country or some there familys. I do have to agree with indubitably mulatto it is not ok to be so boastful like he was.

I agree with both Hillary and Indubitably Mulatto. Like Hillary i did not get a lot of the story. Bits and pieces of it left me wondering. How Indubitably Mulatto said they didn't like how he was so boastful, i didn't either. I feel like in today's society sometimes there are people who still are boastful with there accomplishments. Even though society does not like it.
